(CNSNews.com) - A new ad campaign urges college students to
"Drink responsibly," and according to the message, that
means "Don't drink milk - drink beer instead." The idea
is to save a cow's life, according to the ad's sponsors, People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The message that
college kids should replace milk with beer has infuriated groups
that try to reduce drunken driving. Mothers Against Drunk Driving
sent a letter to PETA, asking the group to pull the ad campaign,
fearing that it might encourage underage drinking. "We're
very concerned and appalled with it for the simple fact that
underage drinking is the number one drug problem among American
youths," said Teresa Hardt, a spokeswoman for MADD. PETA
argues that beer has more nutrients than milk and that the dairy
industry is cruel to cows and calves.
